Former U.S. Olympian Kristine Lilly speaks with Alfred Galustian during the Coerver Coaching Youth Diploma Course in Canton.

Today is Kristine Lilly’s 41st birthday.

She won’t be celebrating at her home in Needham, Mass., but rather she’ll be in Canton, teaching the game she loves for the second straight day to coaches and young campers at St. Lawrence University.

They couldn’t have a better instructor on a day dubbed “Kristine Lilly Day” by Canton village officials.

Lilly is the most capped player — male or female — in the history of international soccer, gaining her 352nd and final cap against Mexico in a World Cup qualifier in November 2010.

In her career, she scored 130 goals for the United States women’s national team, second only to Mia Hamm’s 158 and Abby Wambach’s second-place growing tally.

When Lilly retired from international competition last year, it concluded a 24-year career, which began as a 16-year-old high school student, competing for the U.S. in the 1988 World Cup. Now she’s involved in the sport in new ways, including operating a camp with Hamm and other former Olympic teammates, doing private lessons and working camps like the Lake Placid Soccer Centre camp at SLU this weekend.

“I want the kids to have a good time, to learn to love the game,” Lilly said. “I don’t want them to burn out by age 12 and that happens sometimes. I hope they can have some special moments in soccer.”

The special moments for Lilly have been numerous. She won Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2004 and competed in five FIFA World Cup tournaments (the only woman to do so), winning two World Championships. She also played professionally, mostly with the Boston Breakers of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA), and before that she was a four-time NCAA champion at the University of North Carolina.

The wife of a firefighter and mother of two also appeared in the HBO documentary “Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team.”

“I’ve had a lot of great moments in my career. I’m very proud of my longevity in the sport,” Lilly said. “It was big winning the World Cup and, of course, the two Olympic gold medals. Those were certainly highlights.”

SLU men’s soccer coach Bob Durocher says he was elated when he found out in April that Lilly would be attending the Lake Placid camp, which specializes in teaching the Coerver Method of soccer.

“I watched her a lot when she played and she was always one of my favorites,” Durocher said. “I was not only impressed with her skill, but with how hard she worked. She has a great left foot. She’s one of my special players and now she’s here. If she still played, she’d still probably be one of the best players out there.”

Lilly, apparently not superstitious as she wore No. 13 throughout her playing career, will be available for autographs today around 3:30 on Sandy MacAllister Field. Durocher has invited the general public to attend, including all area youth soccer players.

“We hope to fill the soccer stadium today. Everyone is welcome,” Durocher said.

Lilly has filled many soccer stadiums in her career and looks forward to the further growth of the sport.

“The women’s game has come a long way and it’s still growing. It’s a process. Every game at the last World Cup was televised on ESPN, so the sport is growing,” said Lilly, who is looking forward to watching friends and former teammates compete in the upcoming London Olympics. “I was a player for a long time, and now I’m a going to be a big fan.”

Five AKFC Teams Headed for Texas

Everything, as they say, is bigger in Texas, and now that includes the size of the AKFC traveling party. In all five squads will be making the trip from Alaska to the second-largest state, each taking part in the Dallas Texans Fall Festival over the weekend of November 18-20.

Midfielder Drini Redzepi puts in a tackle during semifinal action at the Las Vegas Mayor's Cup.

Matches will take place at the Texans’ Ross Stewart Soccer Complex, with our teams playing some of the best from throughout Texas and the Southwest.

On the boys’ side, the well-traveled AKFC 98 United squad will compete in the U14 division, which is already filling up with top competition, including the 2010 Dallas Cup finalists, Houstonians FC 98 Red, as well as the state champions from both Kansas and Oklahoma. Also traveling to Dallas–for the first time as an AKFC squad–are the 96 United boys. Led by club captain Ben Atkinson and a potent attack, the U16 team promises to turn plenty of heads in Dallas. Rounding out the group, and returning to action in AKFC colors after a great experience in Arizona last spring, the 00 United boys bring together one of the most diverse squads in Alaska, including players from Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, Kenai and Fairbanks.

Leading the AKFC girls’ contingent is 96 Aurora, a team comprised of high-school sophomores who are already well into the college recruitment process. The Dallas tournament is yet another step in their development cycle, as the team also prepares for college-showcase participation in February.

Last but certainly not least, the AKFC 01 Aurora girls will again be taking the field in our navy-and-white strip. After an extremely impressive start in Las Vegas last fall, and absolute domination in the 2011 Nike Crossfire Challenge this past July, the team is hoping to build on their success and continue to develop at an accelerated rate. This team currently features the largest player pool within AKFC and remains one of the most exciting age groups within the program.

Coerver® Coaching co-founder Alfred Galustian teaches at the second Barclays Premier League skills course

Barclays Premier League Skills Course

The second Barclays Premier League Skills Course took place at Aston Villa’s training ground on the 27th and 28th November. The course was conducted by Alfred Galustian, co founder of Coerver® Coaching and technical advisor to the Barclays Premier League.

Youth coaches from the following Clubs attended; Manchester City, Everton, Manchester United, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Newcastle United, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United, Wigan Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur.

Galustian said, “This was not a pass or fail course, the idea is to contribute towards the professional development of coaches who work with the most talented young players in the country. The program we have devised teaches the coaching of core skills. In addition it shows how these skills can be used effectively in games.”

Special guests at the course were Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier and Scottish great John Collins.

Gerard Houllier the Former France national team coach and Technical Director told the participants, “In 1993 Michel Platini and I identified that France’s best young players needed to be master technicians. We then invited Alfred Galustian to work at Clairfontaine and the other centers teaching coaches how to improve technical skills”. Houllier said, “that many of France’s top players were a result of this technical emphasis that Alfred and the Coerver Program are well known for”.

Collins said “I have been involved with the Coerver program since I was a teenager, it certainly helped my career. It is essential that we bridge the technical differences between UK players and some of the best players in the World. Watching Barcelona each week confirms to me that we need to teach our young players technical excellence. This should be taught by the experts, Coerver Coaching”.
