COERVER® NW Club Skills Training

”You can't teach skills to an old player. Youth coaches should keep in mind that individual skills need to be nurtured at an early age. Players who haven't mastered the fundamental skills become frustrated because the game gets too difficult for them as they move into higher levels."
Claudio Reyna, Captain U.S. National Team

Comprehensive training in soccer’s essential skills is at the heart of guidelines from U.S. Soccer for the development of youth players and teams. But providing such in-depth training to all of its athletes can strain a Club’s coaching resources. As a solution, Clubs throughout the country have begun to “outsource” much of their technical training to Coerver® Coaching.

Coerver® Coaching’s first priority will always be skills teaching. Every session includes foot skills and ball moves, 1v1 play, attention to developing a dynamic first touch, technical work on striking the ball, and developing effective soccer habits. With input from the club, we provide a written curriculum appropriate to the age level and prior skills training of each team. In addition, we provide our tX-games program for the Club to measure and monitor players’ skill development over time.

Coerver® NW offers Club Academies for Recreational Clubs, Select Clubs, and Premier Clubs during the fall or spring months. Each program runs 8 - 10 weeks.

For this program to be effective, players need to attend all the training sessions and practice their skills at home or outside their team practices, so that team coaches have time to follow up with work on one session’s content before the next session. Our sessions are designed as much to develop the ability of coaches to teach skills as to train the athletes. Teams’ coaches are to be active participants in these sessions, assisting the Coerver® Trainer and, when appropriate, stepping in to experience an activity along with the athletes.

Follow-up is essential between sessions for teams to get maximum value from this program. Coaches receive a detailed written description of each session, to assist them in planning follow-up activities with their teams. (These materials remain the property of Coerver® Coaching and may not be duplicated.)

Wherever possible, Coerver® will assign the same trainer to the same day and time period for the 8-10 weeks of the program. Teams benefit from learning from “another voice”, and our trainers will work with the team coach to reinforce other elements of the team’s training and development.

Clubs which include Coerver Skills Training for all teams U8-U14 become Partner Clubs with Coerver® NW and may promote the role of Coerver® Coaching and use the Coerver® logo in their promotional materials. This can be a powerful element in a club’s marketing program. Coerver® NW will also provide a clinic for coaches each season on a topic of the Club’s choosing and make available a special 5 session camp for new U11 competitive teams. Next, Coerver® NW has an extensive library of ideas and activities to assist the Club in developing a true Soccer Club based on a shared vision about its present and future – as opposed to a club that is mostly just a collection of teams.

Finally, Partner Clubs will be given first consideration as venues for other Coerver® activities such as the 5v5 COERVER CUP, 5-3-1 tournaments, “FOG” training, and our twice-a-year clinics for all coaches. These, too, can be important elements in developing the image of your club.

Skills Training for Clubs normally runs during the fall and spring seasons. Once a club has established Coerver® training, its teams may wish to take advantage of additional training during the winter months. Teams might train weekly or even twice a week, using the more concentrated time frame to address specific areas of the game
